Plain and Simple

Today I finished working on a tote bag and a matching pair of zipper bags. After it was complete, I was very happy with the look and the simplicity of it's style.

Lately I have been finding myself drawn to neutral tones and I love working with neutral colored fabrics. This bag is constructed from painter's drop cloth (canvas) and after washing it, well, I just fell in love with the look and the subtle wrinkles in the fabric.

I added a piece of a vintage embroidered table runner which matched nicely with the fabric that I used to line the bag.

The mauve, cream and aqua lining is a fabric from the late 80's.

The zipper bags coordinate with the bag and lining and have lace zipper pulls.

I enjoyed stitching this bag up. It's classic and clean--plain and simple.
It's fun to pair old with new to create something new! It's been a good long while since I made a bag and  I look forward to
stitching up some others for spring.

Earlier in the week I ordered some pretty spring fabrics on ETSY  and they arrived today! Talk about speedy delivery! They crossed the entire country and arrived in just two days!!! (literally coast to coast)

Oh......and here's a bunny update.....a sampling of a few that I have made....also a lot of fun to make!!!

Hope you are all enjoying some good weather as spring rolls in. We have had some very warm weather and I am trying not to get too used to it. There have been a good many years in the past we have gotten slammed with FEET of snow in March. We did not have a snowy winter this year, it was unseasonably warm by NH standards.....and I have been loving it!
Have a wonderful weekend!

  2. Your tote turned out so pretty, Linda. I love how you used part of a table runner and coordinated it with the pretty vintage lining fabric. The zippered bags are adorable. Your sweet, little bunnies are multiplying. I so love how you use such pretty trim to decorate them. I can tell that you enjoy making them.

    1. Hi Kitty,
Thank you Kitty! I found three little table runners (in a little antique shop), embroidered in 3 different colors. They are so cute and each one can be used to make two bags when cut in half. It's nice to get back in to sewing/crafting once again. I've been collecting so much lace and trim--I could probably make bags for a small army, LOL! Have a nice weekend--guess it's going to be spring-like here in NH!

  3. Linda, the bag turned out absolutely delightful! I love its washed character! And the little zippered cases, so darling! You chose perfect fabrics to complement the bag, and I love the idea of using an old runner as embellishment. Delightful work! I'm glad that spring weather is there for you! So far our highest temps have been in the 50s, but spring is definitely marching closer :)

  10. Ah ha, I have just a few little bits of old embroidery, where some of the fabric is stained or has holes, this idea would be perfect to use the good bits. Yours is so pretty, thank you for the lovely idea.

  11. Your bag turned out great- I love the fabric you used for lining. I enjoy using drop cloth for bags and pillows because of the soft texture. I have always just stenciled my bags, but you have given me the idea of embellishing with fun bits of cloth.

Thanks for the inspiration and for sharing with SYC.

    1. Yes, the dropcloths do make a great stenciling material. I love working with them and there are many different textured dropcloths. Some are smooth, others more nubby but I love all of the textures! Thank you for your visit and comment. So appreciate it!

  12. Linda,
I am with you, I am leaning towards more neutral, gentle hues as well. I suppose I will, at some point lean toward colorful again, but there is just something so calming and classy with natural.
These are just beautiful and I can just imagine carrying a bundle of fresh flowers in the large bag and a small tube of light pink lipstick in the smaller one:)
Thinking of you my dear friend!

  14. Hello dear Linda~~I thought it was time that I come for a visit and see your beauty. There is certainly beauty to be found here. Your tote with matching bags is darling, and those bunnies are absolutely adorable, and of course they had to be pink. :-)
We are still surrounded with plenty of snow and more in the forecast this week, but there are signs of spring moving in. I try and enjoy each day as it comes then there is never any disappointment. The seasons come and go so quickly, why not enjoy them to the fullest.
Thank you for your sweet visit and lovely comment, it was so nice having you. It is good to be back.

Have a beautiful and blessed week, dear friend.

We had some flurries today but it turned to sleet and rain. No snow on the ground. Looks like we'll have a longer spring this year as we've already had such warm weather. Happy spring! Hoping all is well!
