Anchors Away--Appliqued Tote

Today I tried out the applique stitch on my new sewing machine. I was not terribly proficient at it but I muddled through it. I think I will cut out some simple shapes and practice on some fabric scraps.

The bag turned out fairly well and looks really cute with my LL Bean raincoat and my Lands End boat shoes. Now all I need is a boat! I do love boat rides and love being on the water--particularly the ocean! Next week I will be taking (2) 45-min ferry rides in one day, only about 3 hrs apart and I cannot wait!

Now....back to the bag....which incidentally began as a pair of my father's bermuda length shorts!

This tote has a nice long strap so it will easily go over the shoulder or across the chest.

I cut out the pocket on the back side of the shorts and sewed it as an inside pocket (complete with button closure) with a zig-zag stitch. It's the perfect size to hold (and keep secure) a cell phone and small wallet. I didn't even have to make a pocket, a button-hole or sew a button on. So easy!

So my first attempt at applique was not perfect! SEW WHAT! I will keep on practicing until it is!

Well, in keeping with today's ocean theme, I have maple glazed salmon in the oven for me and haddock baking in the oven for my husband. (he doesn't like salmon) So I should probably go and finish making the rest of our dinner. Ahoy Mates!
